Whether it's trick-or-treaters knocking, or family and friends stopping by for a visit, Halloween is the perfect time to create a unique and colorful front door decoration to delight your visitors.

"Vertical garlands work well on almost any style of door," said Elizabeth Souders, door marketing manager at JELD-WEN. "The garland draws the eye up and makes a simple paneled door look taller."

The cost of this quick-and-easy Halloween craft is about $45. The best place to start is your favorite craft store.

1. Gather these materials, commonly found at craft stores:Raffia rope, taken apart and loosely braidedSmall and large scarecrows on sticksFestive fall wired ribbonArtificial fall leavesArtificial or dried orange Japanese lanternsHot glue gun and glue sticks

2. Take the raffia cluster and bind off the top, if needed, with extra raffia pieces. Braid the raffia loosely and tie off bottom about six inches from the tail of garland with a single piece of raffia.

3. Glue small scarecrow into the raffia braid up near the top. Make a double-looped ribbon, leaving long tails, and tie around braid under small scarecrow. Tuck and glue tails down into the edges of braid.

4. Glue in larger scarecrow below the ribbon, angled to the side. Use the braid like a pincushion to anchor the scarecrow's stick.

5. Add the individual fall leaves and Japanese lantern clusters. Start at the top and work your way down, gluing and inserting the items into the raffia braid.

6. Glue in moss or lichens to give a more authentic, fall look.

"Halloween and the beginning of the cool weather is the perfect time to inspect your doors to make sure they're in good working order before the chilly winter months," Souders said. "Just a few quick touch-ups can add years of life to your door.

"The experts at JELD-WEN offer these simple steps to help front doors look their best for Halloween trick-or-treaters.

* Gentle cleaning: Just like windows, doors can often use a good wash. JELD-WEN recommends using gentle materials such as a mixture of one teaspoon of baby shampoo to one gallon of water. Dry thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive tools, harsh liquids, power washers or hoses that can damage doors and windows.

* Inspect weatherproofing measures: Carefully look at the frame, seals and weather strip to make sure the door won't allow cold air into the home during the winter months.* Inspect door surfaces: For painted or stained doors, inspect the finish on all six sides for any signs that restoration is needed, such as cracks, dulling or a whitish cast on the door's surface. Preventing Water Damage in the Kitchen

Refrigerator

The area behind the refrigerator is hardly ever inspected because it is relatively hard to reach. This problem usually occurs when the drain line is clogged. Clean the drain line regularly. Look under the base of the dishwasher for leaks. If you find any leaks, there could be an unsealed joint or a damaged hose. Check the connection and fix as needed. Check the dishwasher hose under the sink for signs of leakage and fix if necessary. Consider installing steel-braided hoses on appliances such as the dishwasher.

From time to time, you may find spots of mold or mildew on your vinyl siding. If these spots are small, then you can simply use a name brand household cleaner. Just always be sure to test it on a small portion of your vinyl siding in an inconspicuous place to make sure it will not damage it at all. If, however, the spots of mold or mildew are a little larger, you can use a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water.

Another common homemade solution is mixture of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. It is best to just find the one that is most convenient and effective for you.

Not all vinyl siding stains, however, are mold or mildew. You may end up with dirt, soot, or even animal stains on the outside of your home. If that is the case, there are a number of general cleaners that are approved for use on vinyl siding. Check your local store for simple household cleaners, and then read the containers carefully to find out if they are effective and safe for use on vinyl siding and specifically on whatever the stain is that you have found on your vinyl siding.
Increasingly, vinyl siding is a common home exterior. It is low maintenance, attractive, and easy to install. You may, though, from time to time need to clean your vinyl siding in order to keep it in good working condition. A Study of Furniture Elements For Smaller Bedrooms

When we enter any bedroom the first thing we notice is the furniture. All humans always see interiors and all decorating ideas that are executed in "elevation". This means we always see the face of the furniture.

Every object in the bedroom large or small has a direct relation to dimensions of the human body. This relation with our body decides the comfort level in a bedroom. If a double bed is oversized, it will naturally occupy more floor space by reducing the volume of empty space. That's why proportions of every furniture piece are vital to maintain comfort levels.

Let's examine some important factors about bedroom furniture units.

1) Double Bed....

This piece of furniture occupies the maximum amount of floor space. A typical double bed measures about 1800mmX1800mmX450mm height. Of course this is a comfortable sized bed but can vary depending upon the requirements at the interior site.

Double beds come in steel/wrought iron/wooden frames. The most important point to note here is that 80% of the structural framework gets covered by linen. The mattress, bed sheets, pillows cover most of the part that supports the load of the users. That's why the real beauty of a double bed lies in the linen used. Linen defines the shape of a double bed to some extent.

The patterns and decorations used on the linen also ads to the overall design theme of the bedroom. The headboard of the double bed (the part of the double bed which stands behind the head when we lie down on the bed) is a prominent feature and can be used effectively by using semi-circular shapes.

One creative use of the headboard is that we can add artificial lighting in it by providing blur glass and the effect of indirect lighting can be created. This is helpful if the master wants to read a book or magazine by relaxing in the bed itself.

Most of the time we see that the space below the mattress is used for storing linen. This is done in the form of sliding drawers which slide out from sides.

I have seen one more creative way of supporting the platform where the master lies down. 2) Wardrobe....

A wardrobe is another element in a bedroom that creates a significant impact on the entire interior design theme. We always see a wardrobe in elevation. A typical wardrobe is most of the times measures 2100mm in height. The length and depth of the wardrobe differs from location to location but is typically around 1200mm in length and 600mm in depth for a single person's wardrobe.

A wardrobe needs special spotlight arrangements to throw light spot on the person in front of the mirror. This will include a flat mirror and small storage spaces for the makeup-kits, perfumes, etc...

4) Study Table with extra storage desk....

A study table is just a place to do some important daily tasks Sometimes it is useful to keep a computer on it. This study table can be designed to include an elevated storage space for books/files.

This combination of a study table and a book shelf is a great way to save space in small bedrooms. If the table top in not occupied by a computer or other objects, it can be made to fold and thus increasing more floor area.

Windows are one of the great energy-wasters of any house. About 25% of the total heat loss is from traditional double glazed sealed windows. New technology, however, has resulted in more efficient energy saving windows that can significantly cut down on heat loss.
Heat loss is not the only concern with windows – they can also let in heat during summer weather. This can increase the cost of running an air conditioner.

Modern windows use special materials to treat the window glass. Low emission coatings are applied to the inside surface which reduce heat loss through the glass. The windows are constructed of two layers of glass with an inert gas in between them. This gas – usually argon – reduces heat loss even more.

To prevent the sun from over-heating the sun during the summer, the glass can be treated with a reflective coating that reduces interior temperatures. This type of coating, however, is not suitable for cold climates because the windows can also be a source of winter heat during sunny days.

There are many components to energy saving windows that can help cut down on your heating and cooling costs. The glazings (layers of glass) can be coated, and some manufacturers may use multiple glazings to reduce heat loss.

Coated glazings are beneficial in reducing heat loss and they can also reduce the amount of Ultra Violet (UV) light that enters the house. UV causes colors to fade in drapes and carpets, so using this type of window can make these items last longer.

The frames of energy saving windows can be made from wood, aluminum, PVC, or composites. The best types are wood or PVC because the heat loss from the frame itself is reduced. To further enhance the energy saving qualities of the windows, non-metallic spacers are used between the glazings.

Windows are sometimes graded according to their insulating value. Investing in energy saving windows is a great idea for both new and older homes. The windows cost a bit more than conventional windows but the savings in your utility bills will make up the difference in a few years.

Chandelier Installation

Before you begin the installation check the ceiling electrical box to ensure a new light will be securely supported. When buying bulbs, you should decrease the bulb wattage when larger numbers of bulbs are required. For example, a 2 socket light could be fitted with two 60 watt bulbs, whereas a chandelier with three or more light sockets is probably more suited to 40 watt bulbs.

Once correct bulbs are installed, the chandelier should give off sufficient light coverage without blinding anyone. Dimmers are helpful as they allow you to adjust the light to your requirements.
Cleaning Chandeliers

It is always a good idea to clean your chandelier at least once a year to keep it looking clean and shiny. Before you start, turn the lights of at least 10 minutes before you begin so the bulbs can cool down. Never clean the chandelier while the lights are on, this could lead to a burnt hand.

If you are going to remove the pieces then separate the light in sections or draw up a picture of how the light fits together so you won’t be frustrated and confused later when trying to put the pieces back together. Place a blanket or duvet under the light to catch any pieces of the light that may fall. Keep the fixture in the same place as you clean and do not turn it around as this may strain the power cable.

When you are ready to begin, remove the trimming such as pendants and place in container. Clean with mild detergent and then rinse in hot water. The hotter the water the less spots. When cleaning festoons, place under water at arm length to stop from intertwining. Always use mild detergents as harsh cleaning products can make the pendants brittle and blackened.

Many darken with age but it is always good to delay this as long as possible. When cleaning the body of the light, it is recommended to use a dry, lint free cloth for the best possible result. Remember to dust the bulbs as well as these are give away to cleanliness of the light. Replace all light pieces on the chandelier and lightly polish it to remove any remaining spots.

Enhance Your Garden with Beautiful Edging

Adding edging around your garden or landscape is as important as the garden itself. The edging frames your garden much like a picture frame. A picture can be interesting and beautiful but it needs a frame to enhance its appearance, so it is with your garden.

There are various types of garden edgings. Many people prefer to use something heavy and permanent, like a low brick wall, or rocks set together with mortar. However, not everyone is physically capable of creating such a structure.

Bricks set freely can be just as effective. They can be placed in a simple line, end to end, or stacked in a double row, with gaps in between. They can also be set diagonally, leaning against each other for support.

Another attractive alternative is to decorate short lengths of board with old tiles. Tiles can often be purchased very cheaply from re-recycling places. Glue your choice of tile along the board using outdoor glue. On each end of the board, tack a peg with one end pointed. This will be used to push into the soil to support your board and keep it off the ground.

Bush rocks can also be used to give your garden that finished look. They need not be too big, unless you have plenty of muscle or help. You may be able to gather rocks from a friend's farm, or from the bush if that is legal in your area. Otherwise, garden suppliers usually have plenty to choose from.

How about flowering plants or shrubbery to create a living border. Choose a plant that will be suitable for your climate and conditions. The pretty pink of alpine phlox is an attractive border and the plants can be divided and planted again and again. Many other plants can be propagated in this way, thus reducing the initial costs. Of course, your border will take a little more time to get established than if you bought all the necessary plants at once.

Gazanias are another hardy border plant that can be divided many times. Bulbs might seem like a good choice too, but remember that they will die down and leave your borders looking messy for ages. In addition, they remain dormant for at least six months, so if you plant anything else there you risk damaging the bulbs. Of course, you can dig them up and replace them with something else, but you may prefer a more permanent border edge to save on the workload.

If you have a larger garden, comfrey is a plant to consider using for an edging plant. Its thick growth habit will prevent any grasses intruding into the garden, and the leaves can be pulled for excellent mulch around roses or other plants. It has delightful, dainty flowers in season too. However, a small garden could be overwhelmed by more than one comfrey plant.

In a small garden attractive annuals like sweet alice, pansies, violas or petunias make great borders. For something a bit different, try an herb border. Then you can go out and pick your herbs any time you want. Chives have a crisp green color that would make your garden sparkle while strawberries will entice the kids out into the fresh air to have a healthy snack.

Some people prefer to simply bevel an edge around their garden with the shovel. This is a good option if your lawn has the sort of grass with runners, like kikuyu. Those runners can be kept under control by chopping them off every so often with the edge of the shovel.

(ARA) - Now that summer is here, a lot of people are considering home improvement projects, but you don't have to tear down walls or rearrange the furniture to make a statement. In most cases, reworking the lighting is all it will take to transform a room from "drab" to "fab.

""When people go into model homes and see what's in: the high ceilings, angled walls and dramatic lighting, they want to recreate the looks in their own homes, but run into limitations. Unless they're willing to spend a lot of money on renovations, they can't do anything about the shape of the room, but decorative lighting can be used to transform the space and create a sense of style anywhere," says Joe Rey-Barreau, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association and professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky. He travels the country tracking lighting trends, and believes one of the reasons decorative lighting has become so popular in the past two or three years is because it allows you to easily add a modern touch to any room without having to make expensive upgrades.

Among the many options gaining in popularity, putting recessed cans in kitchen and living areas to better balance the light, installing track lighting above areas you want to highlight, putting up picture lights to showcase photos and artwork and adding pendants that will allow you to showcase a small area. These days, they are being hung over islands and peninsulas in kitchens, and in rooms dedicated to entertainment -- over bars and gathering spots in basements. "When you think of a pendant, the image that comes to mind is probably a small, obscure fixture hanging down from the ceiling to light a specific area, but these days they are anything but obscure," says Rey-Barreau. "They are fashion statements.

"Pendants are now available in all shapes and sizes and in looks ranging from traditional to eclectic. "The pendant offerings we have found our customers reacting favorably to have been those with a color pallet consistent with an Asian Fusion, Retro and Tuscan/Mediterranean style. Those utilizing calming neutrals with clear hues infused with light are popular as well," says Cory Echito, who is a product development manager for the Juno Lighting Group in Chicago.

Marc Pfeiffer, national sales manager for W.A.C. Lighting in New York says the hottest sellers right now are small pendants featuring colored and multi-colored glass. "People are seeking out the most unusual fixtures they can find and putting them up not just for the purpose of lighting a room, but to be conversation pieces," he says.

Pendant fixtures made of metal can give a room an almost gothic look. Ceramic fixtures can be painted any color under the sun. "If you're looking for a more unique look, a popular material to go with is Murano glass hand-blown in Italy," says Ray-Barreau. "Each one is an original work of art." Some Murano fixtures feature a single color of glass blown into a bell-or bowl-shaped fixture. Others are tapestries of color twisting and turning into unusual shapes. Once you hang the pendant up and add a light bulb, color dances across the ceiling or wall the light is pointed towards.

Just as varied as the colors and materials available for pendants are the methods of display. "A lot of people are putting up not one, but two, three or even four pendants in a circle or row to emphasize a space," says Pfeiffer. "Some people hang each of them from single channel fixtures. I've also seen them displayed on tracks." Pendants range in price from around $30 to upwards of $500 for those made of hand-blown glass. Selecting the Best Type of Replacement Window for Your Home

(ARA) - So you've decided to replace your rotted, leaky windows. That decision was relatively easy considering new windows provide returns through energy cost savings and even greater returns in an increased home value. You've made a wise decision.

With the range of replacement window options available, however, your decisions have just begun. Do you want to replace the whole window? What about the interior or exterior trim? Do you need only the sash -- the glass and its casing -- rather than the entire frame? Are you doing the work yourself or will you hire a contractor to help? Do you want to buy the windows from the same place that will install them? And then there's the multitude of options and features on windows to consider.

"With the replacement window models available today," said Jeffrey Orme, brand manager for Crestline Windows & Doors, "homeowners can replace as little or as much as they'd like -- from just the glass or sash to the entire window and exterior trim. The various options can take the project from a relatively easy do-it-yourself task to a full-scale, contractor-level project."

Accurate Measurements

Measuring for replacement windows is one of the most critical parts of the project. Very few homes have off-the-shelf-size windows but instead require windows sized to match their existing window openings. (ARA) - Fall's seasonable temperatures offer a great opportunity to help get your home ready for the rigors of winter. Spend a few weekends winterizing your home now and you'll reap the benefits of lower energy bills and a highly efficient home no matter what the season.Consider this:

* A properly adjusted furnace can help you save 10 percent in fuel consumption.
* Storm windows and doors can reduce heating costs by as much as 15 percent.
* Caulking and weatherstripping cracks in walls and floors, windows and doors will save fuel and money.
* Turning down the thermostat by 10 degrees at night or when the house is unoccupied can save as much as 20 percent of your heating costs. Every 24-hour period that the heat is lowered by one degree can result in a 3 percent savings on your heating bill.

Newer homes, on the other hand, are more airtight and energy efficient. Many have vapor barriers -- plastic within the wall cavity that blocks moisture passage in either direction. With tighter fitting doors and windows, vapor barriers and increased insulation, energy costs are lower, but humidity levels must be monitored more closely.

No matter when your home was built, the key is to strike the right balance when it comes to humidity levels. Air that's too dry can cause furniture to dry out and crack, joints and studs to shrink and twist, and paint and plaster to crack.
