Whether it's trick-or-treaters knocking, or family and friends stopping by for a visit, Halloween is the perfect time to create a unique and colorful front door decoration to delight your visitors.

"Vertical garlands work well on almost any style of door," said Elizabeth Souders, door marketing manager at JELD-WEN. "The garland draws the eye up and makes a simple paneled door look taller."

The cost of this quick-and-easy Halloween craft is about $45. The best place to start is your favorite craft store.

1. Gather these materials, commonly found at craft stores:Raffia rope, taken apart and loosely braidedSmall and large scarecrows on sticksFestive fall wired ribbonArtificial fall leavesArtificial or dried orange Japanese lanternsHot glue gun and glue sticks

2. Take the raffia cluster and bind off the top, if needed, with extra raffia pieces. Braid the raffia loosely and tie off bottom about six inches from the tail of garland with a single piece of raffia.

3. Glue small scarecrow into the raffia braid up near the top. Make a double-looped ribbon, leaving long tails, and tie around braid under small scarecrow. Tuck and glue tails down into the edges of braid.

4. Glue in larger scarecrow below the ribbon, angled to the side. Use the braid like a pincushion to anchor the scarecrow's stick.

5. Add the individual fall leaves and Japanese lantern clusters. Start at the top and work your way down, gluing and inserting the items into the raffia braid.

6. Glue in moss or lichens to give a more authentic, fall look.

"Halloween and the beginning of the cool weather is the perfect time to inspect your doors to make sure they're in good working order before the chilly winter months," Souders said. "Just a few quick touch-ups can add years of life to your door.

"The experts at JELD-WEN offer these simple steps to help front doors look their best for Halloween trick-or-treaters.

* Gentle cleaning: Just like windows, doors can often use a good wash. JELD-WEN recommends using gentle materials such as a mixture of one teaspoon of baby shampoo to one gallon of water. Dry thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use abrasive tools, harsh liquids, power washers or hoses that can damage doors and windows.

* Inspect weatherproofing measures: Carefully look at the frame, seals and weather strip to make sure the door won't allow cold air into the home during the winter months.* Inspect door surfaces: For painted or stained doors, inspect the finish on all six sides for any signs that restoration is needed, such as cracks, dulling or a whitish cast on the door's surface. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommended finish when retouching.

For more seasonal door decor ideas, visit www.jeld-wen.com.

Courtesy of ARA Content

Proceed to Online Learning

Global Filipinos to organize and harness economic, social, and political power of Filipinos through networking. Inspecting the following moisture sources will help in preventing damage where it is likely to happen

Refrigerator

The area behind the refrigerator is hardly ever inspected because it is relatively hard to reach. Inspecting this area will reduce the chance for water problems. water behind the refrigerator is a sign. Do not ignore it, fix immediately or hire an appliance technician. If you detect mold growth, clean it immediately. Locate the moisture and fix it. If you have an icemaker, check the hose to make sure it is sealed and attached to the water supply.

Sink and Countertop

The sink and countertop are highly watered areas in the house. Check regularly under the sink and remove the trash can and other stored items to search for leaks. A drip in the trap under the sink means drain problems and must be repaired fast. Look around the sink, slow draining pipes indicate a blocked drain. A dripping faucet must me repaired promptly. Pay attention to the countertop. If tiles are cracked or grout is missing, fix it to prevent water from pervading. Stained walls and floors around pipes indicate an internal leak that must be fixed to prevent additional damage.

Dishwasher

If the dishwasher doesn’t empty after use, the main filter may be blocked and must be released promptly. When the sink overflows, it is usually due to back-ups. This problem usually occurs when the drain line is clogged. Clean the drain line regularly. Look under the base of the dishwasher for leaks. If you find any leaks, there could be an unsealed joint or a damaged hose. Check the connection and fix as needed. Check the dishwasher hose under the sink for signs of leakage and fix if necessary. Consider installing steel-braided hoses on appliances such as the dishwasher.

For more information visit http://www.restorationsos.com/
Free guides are available

by: Terry Allen

About The Author

Terry Allen is an editorial staff member of RestorationSOS™, a leading restoration services provider for water and fire damages.
To learn more about water and fire damage restoration, visit http://restorationsos.com/.
terrya@restorationsos.com

Proceed now to Online Learning

Global Filipinos to organize and harness economic, social, and political power of Filipinos through networking. Even though it is a low maintenance material, you will still want to clean your vinyl siding from time to time. Just make sure you know about the best cleaning methods before you get started.
Simple maintenance cleaning of your vinyl siding is fairly straightforward.

Use a long-handled brush with soft bristles or a soft cloth to wipe it down with soap and water. If your vinyl siding has textured surfaces to it, you will want to use only the brush with soft bristles so as to avoid wiping stains into the grooves with a cloth. Start with the vinyl siding at the bottom of your house and work your way up.

This will help to prevent streaking from the soapy water running down your house. If you have other materials, such as brick, on parts of your home, cover them so that runoff from your vinyl siding will not affect it. Lastly, always make sure you rinse the area before the cleaning solution dries.

If you want to speed the process of cleaning your vinyl siding along, you can buy or rent a power washer. First of all, however, make sure you have read the instructions on the power washer thoroughly. Second, always make sure you use the power washer at eye level. If you try to point upward, you may end up with water and cleaning solution behind the vinyl siding. These can later leak and cause streaks that can eventually lead to decay.

From time to time, you may find spots of mold or mildew on your vinyl siding. If these spots are small, then you can simply use a name brand household cleaner. Just always be sure to test it on a small portion of your vinyl siding in an inconspicuous place to make sure it will not damage it at all. If, however, the spots of mold or mildew are a little larger, you can use a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water.

Another common homemade solution is mixture of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. It is best to just find the one that is most convenient and effective for you.

Not all vinyl siding stains, however, are mold or mildew. You may end up with dirt, soot, or even animal stains on the outside of your home. If that is the case, there are a number of general cleaners that are approved for use on vinyl siding. Check your local store for simple household cleaners, and then read the containers carefully to find out if they are effective and safe for use on vinyl siding and specifically on whatever the stain is that you have found on your vinyl siding.
Increasingly, vinyl siding is a common home exterior. It is low maintenance, attractive, and easy to install. You may, though, from time to time need to clean your vinyl siding in order to keep it in good working condition. Before you do, make sure you understand what is necessary and what the proper procedure is so that your vinyl siding will look good and last a long time.

by: Henry Gallant

About The Author

Henry Gallant is an expert author at http://www.vinylsidingetc.com/, a comprehensive resource on vinyl siding. All humans always see interiors and all decorating ideas that are executed in "elevation". This means we always see the face of the furniture.

Every object in the bedroom large or small has a direct relation to dimensions of the human body. This relation with our body decides the comfort level in a bedroom. If a double bed is oversized, it will naturally occupy more floor space by reducing the volume of empty space. That's why proportions of every furniture piece are vital to maintain comfort levels.

Let's examine some important factors about bedroom furniture units.

1) Double Bed....

This piece of furniture occupies the maximum amount of floor space. A typical double bed measures about 1800mmX1800mmX450mm height. Of course this is a comfortable sized bed but can vary depending upon the requirements at the interior site.

Double beds come in steel/wrought iron/wooden frames. The most important point to note here is that 80% of the structural framework gets covered by linen. The mattress, bed sheets, pillows cover most of the part that supports the load of the users. That's why the real beauty of a double bed lies in the linen used. Linen defines the shape of a double bed to some extent.

The patterns and decorations used on the linen also ads to the overall design theme of the bedroom. The headboard of the double bed (the part of the double bed which stands behind the head when we lie down on the bed) is a prominent feature and can be used effectively by using semi-circular shapes.

One creative use of the headboard is that we can add artificial lighting in it by providing blur glass and the effect of indirect lighting can be created. This is helpful if the master wants to read a book or magazine by relaxing in the bed itself.

Most of the time we see that the space below the mattress is used for storing linen. This is done in the form of sliding drawers which slide out from sides.

I have seen one more creative way of supporting the platform where the master lies down. By giving an angular slant to the supporting structure of the bed we can save valuable circulation space in a small bedroom. To understand what exactly I am talking about, just visit the webpage below. (Scroll down to the bottom to see a pictorial presentation of this method.) http://www.bedroom-design-and-decorating-ideas.com/teen.htm

2) Wardrobe....

A wardrobe is another element in a bedroom that creates a significant impact on the entire interior design theme. We always see a wardrobe in elevation. A typical wardrobe is most of the times measures 2100mm in height. The length and depth of the wardrobe differs from location to location but is typically around 1200mm in length and 600mm in depth for a single person's wardrobe.

The internal compartments of a wardrobe are divided keeping in mind the various styles and sizes of clothes we wear. The internal design of a wardrobe also depends upon regional influences. For example in Japan, women wear a typical kind of dress or in Indian, most women wear a dress code called as "Saree" which needs much more space similar to trousers.

Depending upon the requirements a wardrobe might also include a small "money safe" with locking arrangements, drawers for keeping smaller sized clothes such as under-garments.

3) Dressing Table....

A dressing table is a place to be happy about. This is the place where we spend a lot of time shaping our faces. A small bedroom may not have enough space for a dressing table. At such times the outer faces of the wardrobe can be used to fix a full height mirror. This also creates a reflection of the rest of the room it and thus creates an illusion of more space.

A wardrobe needs special spotlight arrangements to throw light spot on the person in front of the mirror. About 25% of the total heat loss is from traditional double glazed sealed windows. New technology, however, has resulted in more efficient energy saving windows that can significantly cut down on heat loss.
Heat loss is not the only concern with windows – they can also let in heat during summer weather. This can increase the cost of running an air conditioner.

Modern windows use special materials to treat the window glass. Low emission coatings are applied to the inside surface which reduce heat loss through the glass. The windows are constructed of two layers of glass with an inert gas in between them. This gas – usually argon – reduces heat loss even more.

To prevent the sun from over-heating the sun during the summer, the glass can be treated with a reflective coating that reduces interior temperatures. This type of coating, however, is not suitable for cold climates because the windows can also be a source of winter heat during sunny days.

There are many components to energy saving windows that can help cut down on your heating and cooling costs. The glazings (layers of glass) can be coated, and some manufacturers may use multiple glazings to reduce heat loss.

Coated glazings are beneficial in reducing heat loss and they can also reduce the amount of Ultra Violet (UV) light that enters the house. UV causes colors to fade in drapes and carpets, so using this type of window can make these items last longer.

The frames of energy saving windows can be made from wood, aluminum, PVC, or composites. The best types are wood or PVC because the heat loss from the frame itself is reduced. To further enhance the energy saving qualities of the windows, non-metallic spacers are used between the glazings.

Windows are sometimes graded according to their insulating value. Investing in energy saving windows is a great idea for both new and older homes. The windows cost a bit more than conventional windows but the savings in your utility bills will make up the difference in a few years.

by: Hans Dekker

About The Author
Hans Dekker is author of http://www.alternative-energy-guide.com/. Interior Christmas decorating is an important part of most people's holiday festivities. For many people, the interior decorations are what defines the season of Christmas.

Your home will feel warm with the proper interior Christmas decorating scheme. There are several great ideas for your interior Christmas decorating needs.

Make yours the perfect holiday home with interior Christmas decorating:

• First, create a diorama of bears or dolls dressed in festive seasonal clothes. You could put a small tree with little presents in your display. This is a great way to get your kids involved in the decorating process. Just be sure you don't use a favorite security object, as it might prove difficult to disassembly the diorama throughout the course of the season.

• Second, meet your interior Christmas decorating needs by creating bows from Christmas print ribbon and putting them in various places around your house including your curtains.

• Third, hang stockings throughout your house, even if you know they aren't your stuffing stockings. It offers a festive feel to your home.

Next, use fabric paint and a traditional white table cloth to make a holiday patterned table cloth. This is another great activity to do with your little ones. Just be sure to express to them that they are not allowed to paint on the tablecloth on a year round basis.

Next, dress your bathroom for the holidays by attaching ornaments and other decorations(of the unbreakable type) to a clear shower curtain with a hot glue gun. Another decorating idea is to get your houseplants into the swing of the season by hanging ornaments on them after you decorate your tree.

For a quick ornament idea, try hanging a cookie cutter with a bit of Christmas ribbon. To help with your decoration as well as your Christmas trivia knowledge, place a basket of seasonal books on your coffee table or end table. It will look festive, and it may just help you win a quick family game sometime.

Interior Christmas decorating does not have to be difficult or expensive with ideas like these.

by: Adam Peters

About The Author
Adam Peters writes regularly for http://www.home-decorating-reviews.com/. With a range of styles, designs and finishes to choose from selecting a chandelier can be as much of a creative process as you would like it to be.

Each chandelier adds a touch of class to any room and warmth or vibrancy into any atmosphere. Styles can range from elaborate and large to modern and aesthetically pleasing. Chandeliers complement other lighting well and will add value to your home.

When choosing a chandelier for a dining room, the Victorian style is highly recommended as this popular design will add tranquillity and calm to a room that can be chaotic at even the best of times. There are always popular choices to choose from with Wrought Iron and Crystal styles at the top of the list.

Some chandeliers can be hung alone as a center piece feature that will dress up any room. Choose from the vast array of finishes and shade styles to find a design that will create a room of modern style with a touch of love for art. Chandeliers can range decorative styles to create a modern, dramatic, simple, elegant and formal look.

The styles of chandeliers available include Tiffany, Victorian, Art deco, South western, Tropical, Crystal, Transitional, Early American, Lodge style, Whimsical, Old world, Oriental, Traditional classics, Country cottage, Architectural and mission style. Each chandelier style can work best in it’s own setting whether for a modern look, shimmering elegance, relaxed or sleek and shiny.

Find the perfect finish for your room and it will work wonders with existing furniture and style. The finishes range from white or beige, multi-coloured, polished gold or brass, crystal, polished nickel or chrome, wood, rattan, iron, brick, bronze, rust and antique or satin brass. The type of chandeliers can include centre bowl, no shade, pot racks, crystal and shaded candles.

Chandelier Installation

Before you begin the installation check the ceiling electrical box to ensure a new light will be securely supported. If the new light is around the same weight as the old light, then the electric box should be able to support the new light fixture. When hanging over a dining table, centre the light in the middle of the table with 30” distance between the tabletop and the light, to prevent any bumped heads.

When buying bulbs, you should decrease the bulb wattage when larger numbers of bulbs are required. For example, a 2 socket light could be fitted with two 60 watt bulbs, whereas a chandelier with three or more light sockets is probably more suited to 40 watt bulbs.

Once correct bulbs are installed, the chandelier should give off sufficient light coverage without blinding anyone. Dimmers are helpful as they allow you to adjust the light to your requirements.
Cleaning Chandeliers

It is always a good idea to clean your chandelier at least once a year to keep it looking clean and shiny. Before you start, turn the lights of at least 10 minutes before you begin so the bulbs can cool down. Never clean the chandelier while the lights are on, this could lead to a burnt hand.

If you are going to remove the pieces then separate the light in sections or draw up a picture of how the light fits together so you won’t be frustrated and confused later when trying to put the pieces back together. Place a blanket or duvet under the light to catch any pieces of the light that may fall. Keep the fixture in the same place as you clean and do not turn it around as this may strain the power cable.

When you are ready to begin, remove the trimming such as pendants and place in container. Clean with mild detergent and then rinse in hot water. The hotter the water the less spots. When cleaning festoons, place under water at arm length to stop from intertwining. Always use mild detergents as harsh cleaning products can make the pendants brittle and blackened.

Many darken with age but it is always good to delay this as long as possible. When cleaning the body of the light, it is recommended to use a dry, lint free cloth for the best possible result. Remember to dust the bulbs as well as these are give away to cleanliness of the light. Replace all light pieces on the chandelier and lightly polish it to remove any remaining spots.
http://www.chandelier-lights.com

by: Claire Calkin

About The Author
Claire Calkin operates several websites covering home decor and chandelier lighting subjects.
claire@decor-furnishings.com

Proceed now to Online Learning

Global Filipinos to organize and harness economic, social, and political power of Filipinos through networking. If that is really true, then why is it that some kitchen designs just don’t seem to support more than one cook or guest at a time? You can turn your kitchen into a functional and beautiful workspace and gathering place for the entire family. Even if you have limited square footage, there just may be more room for expansion, storage, and oh yeah, cooking in your kitchen than you think.

Counters & Cabinets

Storage is definitely a consideration in designing a functional kitchen. If you are limited by floor space, just look up. There is often a great deal of space between the counter tops and ceiling that just isn’t being used in a kitchen. Look at the space above the refrigerator.

Is yours just collecting dust or take out menus? If so, add a cabinet and you’ve got a great place to store seldom used platters or treats you want to keep hidden from the children.
Kitchen cabinets also don’t have to be limited to one side of the countertop. If your kitchen design has a peninsula or island, you can use the ends and back side for more cabinet storage space.

Kitchen cabinets come in more styles and finishes that you can imagine. However, if your budget is limited then you don’t need to replace them for an entirely new look. Cabinet refacing lets you select cabinet patterns that are up to date and beautiful.

New countertops don’t always need to be included in this home improvement project either. Laminate countertops come with repair strips that will give new life to a worn surface.

Laying Out Completely New Kitchen Designs

If your budget calls for a complete renovation, then now is the time to really think about layouts and maybe calling in some specialist. The basic theory is that there should be no more than 2 steps between work stations. That means you should be able to go from the sink to stove in 2 steps; from the range to the refrigerator in 2 steps and so on.

However, with today’s extra large sized kitchens that’s not the case any more. You still should choose layouts that consider how much time it takes to accomplish the normal tasks of putting dishes away from the dishwasher or getting foods from the refrigerator to the stove.

The newest gadgets in these mega kitchens make timesaving and energy efficiency into an art form. There are refrigerator drawers right next to the range and microwaves that brew your coffee while making your toast!

Fixtures and Furniture

The finishing touches are what make kitchen designs more inviting than ever. The furnishings, light fixtures and even the cabinet hardware can make kitchens into real living rooms. Look for task lighting that can highlight work spaces and then radiant lighting for atmosphere.

You can even turn the legs of old furniture or newel posts into bases for centre islands to make you kitchen furnishings blend with the rest of the house. Get creative and enjoy doing much more than cooking in your new kitchen.

by: Guy Morris

About The Author
Guy Morris is author and designer of the website http://www.kitchen-cabinets-tips.com/. Selecting the right flooring fore your home though, is not just as simple as choosing the look you want. There is so much more to take into consideration before you find the right floor for you.

Tip One - Think about the kind of lifestyle you lead before you pick your flooring. An extremely important thing to consider when choosing your flooring is its durability and toughness. If you have a large family and pets, hardwoods may not be the most ideal choice as they are not as durable as most floors and can tend to stain easily as well as being sensitive to water and humidity.

If you want something that is stain resistant and tough then laminates may be a good floor to consider. They have become a very popular choice these days. Many even come warranties for 25 – 40 years to guarantee their durability. Tiles are also good for durability and are easy to clean. Certain types of carpet can be great for durability as well but may be harder to clean.
Tip Two - Make sure you don’t get so caught up in how the flooring looks that you neglect to think about comfort.

Carpet is great from children as it is a little more cushioned than other floors. Also take in to consideration the climate you live in. A wood floor may not be the best option if you live in a cold climate as it can get drafty. Carpets are a better choice for cold climates and you can even consider floor heating. Tiles and Laminate can also be cold although you can put mats over them
Tip Three - Choosing the right look for your home can be a challenge. Make sure you have an idea of the look and feel you want before choosing your flooring as it can make a massive difference. Hardwood was a popular floor for the wealthy in old times and still has a natural warmth about it that is just exquisite.

It has a timeless classic look and there are many different types of hardwood to suit many home styles. Everything from the regal air of Brazilian cherry to the welcoming warmth and elegance of Maple hardwood.

Laminate looks very modern and sleek and ads sophistication and simplicity to any home.
Floor tiles can be of stone, slate, marble, ceramic, wood, linoleum or carpet and are available in a bewildering variety of shapes, sizes, colors and qualities that can be matched with almost any style of home.

An attractive floor matched with interiors of your house can drastically enhance the total look of your home so choose carefully!

Tip Four - One thing you want to know up front is how much cleaning and maintenance your flooring is going to need and how easy it is to clean and maintain. Hardwoods take a little more care. They need careful cleaning and maintenance where as most carpets require minimal care as do laminates and tiles.

For rooms that get a lot of family use like kitchen and bathrooms, it is important that floors for these rooms are easy to clean. Linoleum and textured vinyl can be a pain as dirt can accumulate in the crevices and also, tiles with white grout can become stained and dirty looking. If hardwoods are kept in these areas it can be a pain as they don’t cope well with spillages and humidity.

by: Mellissa O'Brien

About The Author
Mellissa O’Brien is a writer and expert in Flooring. While a barrel of oil is at an all-time high and natural gas prices nearly doubled, homeowners should take action to save money and make their home more beautiful.

If you're wondering if your home needs new siding, consider this:

* Were my heating and cooling energy bills much higher than I wanted them to be?

* Has it been more than three years since I repainted or stained my home's exterior?

* Do I think my home's exterior has lost its luster and do my neighbors hint about when are we going to do something?

* Do I have enough insulation between the siding and walls of my home -- if any insulation at all?

* Is my home 10 years old or more?

Rick and Julia Hartman have been living in their home for nine years and plan on staying, but wanted to make it look nicer.

The Hartmans had new siding installed on their home this summer. "The installers put insulation between the siding and the house. We could already tell this summer it was easier to cool. The electricity bill is already lower. We're anxious to see what it'll be like this winter."

The Hartmans had masonite siding on their home. "I painted it once and said never again. I don't like painting for one thing," Rick said.

Most siding installed on homes today is constructed of steel, vinyl or wood. Steel siding is the most durable. Wood siding needs to be scraped and painted every few years. Temperature changes can cause vinyl to expand, contract and crack.

How the siding is installed on the home is also very important. Some siding comes in standard 12-foot lengths, which can leave the average home with more than 130 visible seams. Dirt, moisture and bugs can get behind these seams leaving the home looking dirty and detracting from its curb appeal.

There is a company that can manufacture and install its siding to fit any size. ABC Seamless Siding brings the siding to your home in a factory on wheels. The siding is roll-formed and cut to the exact dimensions of your house. This eliminates ugly seams and gives your home a clean seam-free look.

Rising energy costs have many homeowners looking at ways to improve their home's energy efficiency. An investment in professionally installed seamless steel siding and insulation wrapped around your home can protect your most valued asset while saving you time and money for years to come.

For more ways to make your home more energy efficient, contact an ABC Seamless professional at (800) 732-6577 or log on to www.abcseamless.com.

Courtesy of ARA Content

Proceed now to Online Learning

Global Filipinos to organize and harness economic, social, and political power of Filipinos through networking. The edging frames your garden much like a picture frame. A picture can be interesting and beautiful but it needs a frame to enhance its appearance, so it is with your garden.

There are various types of garden edgings. Many people prefer to use something heavy and permanent, like a low brick wall, or rocks set together with mortar. However, not everyone is physically capable of creating such a structure.

Bricks set freely can be just as effective. They can be placed in a simple line, end to end, or stacked in a double row, with gaps in between. They can also be set diagonally, leaning against each other for support.

Another attractive alternative is to decorate short lengths of board with old tiles. Tiles can often be purchased very cheaply from re-recycling places. Glue your choice of tile along the board using outdoor glue. On each end of the board, tack a peg with one end pointed. This will be used to push into the soil to support your board and keep it off the ground.

Bush rocks can also be used to give your garden that finished look. They need not be too big, unless you have plenty of muscle or help. You may be able to gather rocks from a friend's farm, or from the bush if that is legal in your area. Otherwise, garden suppliers usually have plenty to choose from.

How about flowering plants or shrubbery to create a living border. Choose a plant that will be suitable for your climate and conditions. The pretty pink of alpine phlox is an attractive border and the plants can be divided and planted again and again. Many other plants can be propagated in this way, thus reducing the initial costs. Of course, your border will take a little more time to get established than if you bought all the necessary plants at once.

Gazanias are another hardy border plant that can be divided many times. Bulbs might seem like a good choice too, but remember that they will die down and leave your borders looking messy for ages. In addition, they remain dormant for at least six months, so if you plant anything else there you risk damaging the bulbs. Of course, you can dig them up and replace them with something else, but you may prefer a more permanent border edge to save on the workload.

If you have a larger garden, comfrey is a plant to consider using for an edging plant. Its thick growth habit will prevent any grasses intruding into the garden, and the leaves can be pulled for excellent mulch around roses or other plants. It has delightful, dainty flowers in season too. However, a small garden could be overwhelmed by more than one comfrey plant.

In a small garden attractive annuals like sweet alice, pansies, violas or petunias make great borders. For something a bit different, try an herb border. Then you can go out and pick your herbs any time you want. Chives have a crisp green color that would make your garden sparkle while strawberries will entice the kids out into the fresh air to have a healthy snack.

Some people prefer to simply bevel an edge around their garden with the shovel. This is a good option if your lawn has the sort of grass with runners, like kikuyu. Those runners can be kept under control by chopping them off every so often with the edge of the shovel.

Whatever option you choose, it will enhance your garden to have a beautiful edging. In most cases, reworking the lighting is all it will take to transform a room from "drab" to "fab.

""When people go into model homes and see what's in: the high ceilings, angled walls and dramatic lighting, they want to recreate the looks in their own homes, but run into limitations. Unless they're willing to spend a lot of money on renovations, they can't do anything about the shape of the room, but decorative lighting can be used to transform the space and create a sense of style anywhere," says Joe Rey-Barreau, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association and professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky. He travels the country tracking lighting trends, and believes one of the reasons decorative lighting has become so popular in the past two or three years is because it allows you to easily add a modern touch to any room without having to make expensive upgrades.

Among the many options gaining in popularity, putting recessed cans in kitchen and living areas to better balance the light, installing track lighting above areas you want to highlight, putting up picture lights to showcase photos and artwork and adding pendants that will allow you to showcase a small area. These days, they are being hung over islands and peninsulas in kitchens, and in rooms dedicated to entertainment -- over bars and gathering spots in basements. "When you think of a pendant, the image that comes to mind is probably a small, obscure fixture hanging down from the ceiling to light a specific area, but these days they are anything but obscure," says Rey-Barreau. "They are fashion statements.

"Pendants are now available in all shapes and sizes and in looks ranging from traditional to eclectic. "The pendant offerings we have found our customers reacting favorably to have been those with a color pallet consistent with an Asian Fusion, Retro and Tuscan/Mediterranean style. Those utilizing calming neutrals with clear hues infused with light are popular as well," says Cory Echito, who is a product development manager for the Juno Lighting Group in Chicago.

Marc Pfeiffer, national sales manager for W.A.C. Lighting in New York says the hottest sellers right now are small pendants featuring colored and multi-colored glass. "People are seeking out the most unusual fixtures they can find and putting them up not just for the purpose of lighting a room, but to be conversation pieces," he says.

Pendant fixtures made of metal can give a room an almost gothic look. Ceramic fixtures can be painted any color under the sun. "If you're looking for a more unique look, a popular material to go with is Murano glass hand-blown in Italy," says Ray-Barreau. "Each one is an original work of art." Some Murano fixtures feature a single color of glass blown into a bell-or bowl-shaped fixture. Others are tapestries of color twisting and turning into unusual shapes. Once you hang the pendant up and add a light bulb, color dances across the ceiling or wall the light is pointed towards.

Just as varied as the colors and materials available for pendants are the methods of display. "A lot of people are putting up not one, but two, three or even four pendants in a circle or row to emphasize a space," says Pfeiffer. "Some people hang each of them from single channel fixtures. It's used for everything from entertaining to doing homework. Oh, and cooking, too. The amenities found in the kitchen reflect this multi-tasking. You're likely to find a computer and a television in the room in addition to more traditional appliances.

But the fundamental role of the kitchen hasn't changed - and neither has the desire of home cooks for features that make the kitchen functional and practical as well as attractive. "Double ovens, commercial-grade appliances and solid surface countertops were once found only in upscale homes, but they are becoming the standard for all kitchens as they go from being behind the scenes to the forefront of the action," notes Jamie Hurd, academic department director of interior design at The Art Institute of Portland.

All of these upgrades add style to a room that many consider the focal point of their homes. "In newer homes, the kitchen often opens up into the family room, becoming part of the living area," says Hurd. For this reason, in addition to state-of-the-art appliances, homeowners are adding other stylish elements as well, such as colorful tiled backsplashes and beautiful wood cabinets.

"People realize the value of a good kitchen, and the value it adds to their homes," says Hurd. And details like plumbing and lighting are just as important as the right appliances. Two new sinks and accessories from Kohler reflect the trend of kitchens that work hard and look great. Cast iron sinks with Smart Divide functionality provide the best of both worlds - the convenience of a double-basin sink and the roominess of a single-basin sink.

Kohler accomplishes this thanks to a basin divider that is half the height of conventional dividers and thereby offers greater clearance between the faucet and the mid-section of the sink. Thanks to this innovative design, the Smart Divide sink is better suited to accommodate larger pots and pans with extended handles. It also helps save water, since extra long pots and pans can be more fully submerged, meaning less water is required to soak the cookware. The Smart Divide sinks are available in two models, Iron/Tones and Langlade.

Homeowners who want streamlined functionality will love the accessories they can use with the sinks, including Kohler's popular Forté pullout kitchen faucet. Graceful and functional, the spout height and reach are generous enough to provide added clearance when handling large containers. The pullout spray head is easy to maneuver and the spray pattern can be changed with one hand. It is easy to maintain, featuring a MasterClean Sprayface that withstands calcium buildup and can be cleaned simply by rubbing the sprayface with a fingertip.

The faucet is available in a number of finishes to fit any décor. If you're searching for an uncluttered look for your kitchen, you can add a hot water dispenser for making instant coffee or tea and put soap or lotion dispenser under your sink for a sleek look. A new universal cutting board means you can wash and chop your produce right at the sink no matter what size your kitchen sink happens to be.For more information on these and other innovations for the kitchen, visit KOHLER.com or call (800) 4-KOHLER.

Courtesy of ARA Content

Proceed now to Online Learning

Global Filipinos to organize and harness economic, social, and political power of Filipinos through networking. That decision was relatively easy considering new windows provide returns through energy cost savings and even greater returns in an increased home value. You've made a wise decision.

With the range of replacement window options available, however, your decisions have just begun. Do you want to replace the whole window? What about the interior or exterior trim? Do you need only the sash -- the glass and its casing -- rather than the entire frame? Are you doing the work yourself or will you hire a contractor to help? Do you want to buy the windows from the same place that will install them? And then there's the multitude of options and features on windows to consider.

"With the replacement window models available today," said Jeffrey Orme, brand manager for Crestline Windows & Doors, "homeowners can replace as little or as much as they'd like -- from just the glass or sash to the entire window and exterior trim. The various options can take the project from a relatively easy do-it-yourself task to a full-scale, contractor-level project."

Accurate Measurements

Measuring for replacement windows is one of the most critical parts of the project. Very few homes have off-the-shelf-size windows but instead require windows sized to match their existing window openings. A measurement off by only a half inch could mean the replacement part may not fit the window frame. In the case of a full replacement window, an inaccurate measurement may result in the need to cut into interior sheetrock and exterior siding in order to accommodate the window. Always double check your measurements or have another person verify your measurements.

Sash Kits

Double hung windows are the easiest windows to update. With a sash replacement kit, homeowners can replace just the operable part of the window by inserting new sashes into an existing window frame and jamb. In about an hour per window, you can have new double-hung windows that operate effortlessly, stay open without ugly props, and tilt in for easy cleaning. Many sash kits include features of today's new construction windows such as smooth operating balance systems, high performance glass, and decorative grilles. You can also choose the material from which you'd like your new sash: all vinyl, vinyl exterior/wood interior, primed wood and aluminum-clad wood. Easy-to-follow instructions make replacing a sash a manageable do-it-yourself project.

Pocket

WindowsIf you have casement (crank-out) windows or rotten jambs in your double-hung windows, pocket replacement windows can update the look and performance of your windows. These windows fit into the existing window frame, leaving interior and exterior trim intact. Do-it-yourselfers can find pocket windows in a variety of materials in tilt-in single and double hung, casement and awning, gliding, and bow and bay window styles.

Full Replacement Windows

There are advantages to replacing an entire window. Perhaps you prefer casement windows and your home has all double-hung units. Maybe the frames on your windows have serious rot. Or, you want to replace your wood windows with a lower maintenance alternative like vinyl. These situations call for a more complete replacement choice, which means most homeowners will need a professional contractor or window installation firm to help complete the project.

Windows designed for new construction can be adapted for retrofit applications but they're less than ideal. New construction windows often have nailing fins that aid quick and secure installations where siding is not yet present. Siding installed after the windows covers the nailing fins and is inserted into a groove in the window frame for a seamless look. This is why many homeowners replace windows and siding at the same time. If you're not replacing siding, you'll want a true replacement window.

Crestline Windows & Doors makes a complete replacement window with exterior trim, or brickmould, attached. This kind of product is ideal if you want to update the look and energy efficiency of your windows, and your home has damaged or rotting exterior trim. The old windows are removed and the new windows installed from the outside, thereby minimizing interior trim work. The windows' exterior brickmould covers the siding and any gaps that may be between the window frame and the siding. The vinyl exteriors eliminate regular maintenance work common with wood windows. Prefinished stained wood or white composite interiors save the usual finishing time.

The replacement window option you choose will depend on the extent to which your current windows are damaged or rotted. Sash replacement kits or pocket windows are sufficient in some cases; others require a more complete replacement window. The decisions are many, the returns considerable.

If you'd like free instructions on how to measure for replacement sash, contact Crestline at (800) 552-4111.

Courtesy of ARA Content

Proceed to A Delightful Recipe for the Home

How to Make Your Backyard More Appealing

(ARA) - When you're at home after work or on the weekends, where would you rather spend the majority of your time? Inside doing household chores or outside enjoying the backyard? If you'd rather be inside, that's probably because your backyard isn't as attractive as it could be.So how do you make your backyard more enticing? If all you have back there is grass and trees, do some landscaping to add color and interest; a deck which will serve as a place for hanging out and socializing; and for the kids, a backyard play set.

Numerous studies have found that play sets are essential not only for building a child's physical strength, but mental well-being as well. They help children develop manipulative skills; improve their problem solving skills; and increase their imagination and creativity."When they make the decision to buy a playground set, some people go shopping at a toy store or discount retailer.

What most of these consumers don't realize is that although the initial purchase price may seem attractive, when they go that route they are usually sacrificing quality. The kids will loose interest and stop playing on a playground that is basic no frills. If it's not customizable or designed to be added on to or upgraded over time, it will become obsolete in no time," says Karl Jessen, owner of Detailed Play Systems, a New Jersey-based playground company that sells kits parents can buy to put playground sets together themselves.Jessen started his company in 1998 after realizing he had found a niche in the playground business that needed to be filled.

"When my boys were 4 and 1 1/2, I started looking into getting a play set for them, and the prices for quality sets were so high that I decided to build one myself rather than skimp on the size, features, or strength of the playground to save money. At the time, no one was selling do-it-yourself playground kits that met my standards, and that gave me the idea to start a business whose mission would be to help other parents build quality playgrounds for their families that won't break the bank.

"With input from his boys, Jessen put together a set of kits that include the detailed plans to build several playground configurations along with the galvanized bolt and screw hardware necessary to put the sets together and the vinyl roof tops. Accessories such as swings, slides, monkey bars, tire swings, gang planks and climbing walls can be added on.

If you're thinking about building a playground set for your own child, Jessen recommends you start by sitting down with your son or daughter and making a list of the features he or she wants. The company's most popular kit, the Jungle Fort Swing Set, (detailedplay.com), sells for $389. It features a 6 by 6 platform with sandbox underneath, an inclined step ladder, gangplank ramp, and 3- or 4-position swing set. Slides, monkey bars and a rock climbing wall are sold separately allowing customers to fully customize the playground kit to their needs."The best part is how your system can change over time, to create the perfect playground for your children based on their needs and interests, says Jessen.

"Accessories such as periscopes, telescopes, steering wheels and specialty swings can be added on as children grow. Or maybe they have their heart set on wave slides and trapeze bars. Whatever they love to do, from climbing to spinning, you can create the perfect set-up." Spend a few weekends winterizing your home now and you'll reap the benefits of lower energy bills and a highly efficient home no matter what the season.Consider this:

* A properly adjusted furnace can help you save 10 percent in fuel consumption.
* Storm windows and doors can reduce heating costs by as much as 15 percent.
* Caulking and weatherstripping cracks in walls and floors, windows and doors will save fuel and money.
* Turning down the thermostat by 10 degrees at night or when the house is unoccupied can save as much as 20 percent of your heating costs. Every 24-hour period that the heat is lowered by one degree can result in a 3 percent savings on your heating bill.
* A well-insulated attic is a worthy cause -- this step alone can save 20 to 35 percent in heating costs and up to 35 percent on air-conditioning costs.Windows and doors conceal every opening in the home so they are critical elements in a cost-conscious home.

It's important that your windows and doors perform at peak levels. If you have an older home with drafty, leaking windows or doors, it's time to stop procrastinating and take action. Heating is the single, biggest energy user in the home, so take steps now to lower heating bills and save valuable time and money this winter.

"The number one problem in new residential construction in North America is poor window and door installation," says H. Alan Mooney, president of Criterium Engineers. He bases his comments on a survey of professional engineers involved in new home inspections that found almost one quarter of new home complaints involved poorly installed windows and doors.

Window and door sensibility Wood, fiberglass and vinyl windows are all best bets when evaluating the energy efficiency of a home. Make sure windows have the proper coating. At a minimum, always choose Low-e glass to help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while reducing harmful ultraviolet rays which can fade interior furnishings.

Blinds or shades have insulating values as well and can add to overall energy efficiency of your home. Pella (R) Designer Series (R) windows and doors feature blinds or shades tucked between two or three panes of glass for extraordinary insulating value and added privacy.

Whether you're remodeling an existing home or starting a new construction project, following installation instructions and using the correct materials helps your project and the products featured in it perform. A popular material with contractors and do-it-yourselfers is Pella SmartFlash (TM) installation tape used to help seal out air and moisture around doors and windows installed in new homes. SmartFlash tape performs well in virtually any weather, withstands heat and cold and is easy to work with because it's so thin and pliable.

The tape helps minimize the potential for water in the wall cavity by tying the window to a home's weather barrier. Another installation material that improves energy efficiency is foam sealant, such as GREAT STUFF (TM) Pro Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company.

GREAT STUFF when used as directed along with Pella's installation method, creates an energy-efficient barrier by sealing out air and moisture. The menace of moistureToo much moisture in the home can be a menace rather than an advantage. Pets, people and furnishings can all bear the brunt of too much moisture in the air.

Condensation may be less of an issue in older homes if conditions allow for more air exchange between indoors and out, often from around aging, loose or poorly installed windows and doors. However, the tradeoff is higher energy bills.

Newer homes, on the other hand, are more airtight and energy efficient. Many have vapor barriers -- plastic within the wall cavity that blocks moisture passage in either direction. With tighter fitting doors and windows, vapor barriers and increased insulation, energy costs are lower, but humidity levels must be monitored more closely.

No matter when your home was built, the key is to strike the right balance when it comes to humidity levels. Air that's too dry can cause furniture to dry out and crack, joints and studs to shrink and twist, and paint and plaster to crack. Excessive moisture in the home can cause paint to peel and insulation to deteriorate, and condensation on windows and doors can damage sills and trim.

Practical adviceFeeling overwhelmed? Noted architect, author and home design expert, Sarah Susanka says the most important strategy to making an existing house more energy efficient is to recognize that every small step adds up.

"A lot of simple improvements are not done because we believe we should be doing more. And so we do nothing at all," says Susanka. "I'd suggest take the list of options, pin it to your bulletin board, and check off the items as you do them.
